Few things in life are more thrilling than
watching your children, after they've passed out of the teenage years, that is,
live their dreams. And "The Boat People," as they've been named, are doing
just that, and beautifully!
It's not all fun and games - we know that from
our own experience living abroad. Provisioning the boat for example would
push most of us to the brink of exhaustion. But Christy, with canvas bags
and a folding trolley, takes on the job like a pro. When we went to the
local supermarket, she had only two bags plus some paper products to haul back.
"You should see the trolley when the purchases include two cases of beer plus all
the food," she said. And then she has to negotiate the unfriendly streets
towing it all behind her. Maybe it was because I was with her, but she did
not complain even when the sidewalk ended and she was dodging the oncoming
traffic.
Then there's the storing of the food!
Take your own kitchen and shrink it by 10! Now try to imagine putting
everything away and remembering where you put it - under which seat, in which
cubby hole.
Joe is a master when it comes to fixing things
and hates when he has to call in a professional. He labors long and hard
trying to mend a broken "whatever." We marvel at his abilities and his
determination.
Navigating seems to be a shared job. I
can't imagine what they would do without the computer and all the weather and
navigation software. Both seem so comfortable with the process.
And then there are the Grand girls.
Bright and happy - constantly in motion except when they are reading. They
seem so very happy and comfortable with their sailing life. We haven't
heard them complain once about their "reduced" space since we've been here with
them. They are both such amazing children.
So now it's our last morning with The Boat
People. One more meal together, one last hug and kiss.
But we'll leave knowing how happy and confident
they all are. And we'll smile as we think of how they are living their
dreams.
