Thursday, September 13th, Podstrana, Croatia
The arrival of Dan and
Candyce Fisher has brought happiness and sunshine into
our lives. After five days of windy, cloudy, cold
and rainy weather, my parents arrived at their hotel on
Sunday, where we had docked a few hours earlier, in
perfect time with the sun's re-emergence. I have
to say that, despite the weather, we thoroughly enjoyed
our five days in Šibenik, getting to know the town and a
few locals in the process. After a few nights at
anchor in between, we are thrilled to be here and with
family again. Of course, it doesn't hurt that they
have picked the brand new five star
Le Meridien Lav hotel in Podstrana as our rendezvous
point. This is definitely not your average
cruising destination.
Hanging out in Šibenik
was a wonderful cure for the nagging discomfort we have
sometimes felt here in Croatia. The dockhands at the
marina, which was actually just a seawall in the heart
of the old city, became friends. Sunny smiles and
eager assistance were offered at every opportunity
despite the dreary weather. Operating at a slower
pace than usual, we explored the wonderful old walled
city, completed an impressive number of lessons in
school, found a great informal restaurant a little off
the beaten track and crowded with locals, enjoyed
several shopping trips to the daily outdoor market, and
did some hanging out with David and Tamsin, our mates on
Twice Eleven. In the end, I think we have indeed
reached a higher comfort level with Croatia.
Speaking of comfort
levels, we have certainly been enjoying the decadence of
Le Meridien's facilities, including the outdoor infinity
pool and the large indoor pool with numerous jets and
massage areas built in. Although the hot tub is
not working, they have a wonderful little mini spa with
a steam room, sauna and all the hot running water you
could dream of! Surprisingly cheap at less than
$100 a night, it is a real treat to be here at the
marina. I am sure we are able to use more of the
hotel's services than we normally would since my parents
are guests there, but it is still a different world from
the $160 marina in the redolent harbor in Split.
Dan and Candyce are
doing great. It is a wonderful treat for us to
have them willing and able to travel so far to see us on
a regular basis. Often we forget how difficult it
is to juggle the various obligations and demands of the
real world in order to coordinate a trip to visit the
nomads on Zia. I'll do my best to get dad to craft
up a piece to post here before they leave on Sunday.
It is always fun to get a different perspective.
