Wednesday, March 14th, Badalona, Spain
After writing the last update, I realized that I had
forgotten to include a picture of the kittens.
They are growing up so quickly and are soooooooo cute.
We make twice daily visits to see them and play with
them but have so far resisted the temptation to claim
one and take him home. I have to confess, though,
that my instincts are pointing to the only male in the
group. He seems to be the mellowest, strongest and
most affectionate. We'll see.
We
had a great visit with Hal over the weekend. We
were very impressed as he managed to stay awake for a
full day of touring on Saturday, after landing at the
Barcelona International Airport at 9am, direct from
Newark. We did the typical tourist jaunt down
Las Ramblas,
through the Gothic section, and around Port Vell
to our favorite Italian pizzaria "El Obló."
It was great to run into one of my former classmates who
we had introduced to the restaurant during a group lunch
a few weeks back, dining there with two of his friends.
After a first class pizza, we continued down the
boardwalk along the beach to Vila Olímpica.
We enjoyed a double scoop of decadent ice cream while
watching the surfers, windsurfers and kiters cut some
serious wakes through the surf on a beautiful, blustery
Saturday afternoon. Before they realized what we
had done, the girls managed to walk the mile and a half
back to the tram stop that took us straight back to our
local Badalona station.
Sunday night we had organized an outing with a local
friend and another cruising couple to a restaurant in
the "hip" section of Barcelona, "Born,"
that offered a flamenco show every week at 7:30.
Of course, the kitchen didn't open until 9pm, but the
flamenco was fun and, as is proper, we had stopped off
for a few tapas
before going to the show, so we didn't starve. The
show was very entertaining although a first for us in
the flamenco department so it is hard to judge the
quality.
Today I made friends with a grandfather who has been
riding our bus back from school with us lately. He
picks up his four year old granddaughter from the same
school that the girls attend. We had a nice chat
on the bus this afternoon. He patiently endures my
grammatical errors. I need more of this kind of
practice! I also finally met a very nice gentleman
who gets off the bus every day as I am boarding it.
We exchange "holas" and "buenos dias" each morning and I
figured he worked at the boatyard somewhere but I
finally ran into him today on our dock. Jordi does
indeed work at the local boatyard and was going down to
work on Sam's boat, another American boat that has been
here over the winter.
All of these little encounters are making me feel a
little nostalgic at the thought of leaving Badalona.
I have always known that I am a very social being, but I
never realized how much I missed the feeling of comfort
that you get from seeing familiar faces on a daily
basis. They aren't great friends or confidants,
but they still add something special to our lives and we
will miss that.
Joe has been getting the boat ready for our "big trip"
tomorrow, a mile and a half down the beach to the Forum
marina where the boat will be hauled out. I'm
going to skip class so I can help him move the boat and
handle any translation services that might be required
upon our arrival at the boatyard. Our flight to
Paris leaves at 7pm. We are back on Tuesday night,
but plan on spending the night in a hotel and splashing
the boat on Wednesday, after school.
Have a great weekend everybody.

We also would like
to thank our buddy Scott Brunner who has been kind
enough to host the website on his server.
