July 31st Update - Block Island, Rhode Island

We just got back from a dinner of freshly caught clams on Cenou.  Claude has gone out every morning with his claming license to harvest clams from the nearby beach.  Yum.

We finally went on our bicycle ride today after waiting for a pump out (of the holding tank for our two heads, ie toilets) yesterday until about 2:30pm.  Lesson learned: pump out on Friday before the weekend rush.  Joe and the kids wound up hitting the beach within sight of our anchorage yesterday instead of riding bikes in the afternoon.  We had tacos back on Zia with the Dussaud's, and the girls had their first sleep over with Celine and Anouk last night.  They all did very well, watching "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" (the old one) on DVD before hitting the sack at 10pm.

Today, we rented these bikes that have 21 different speeds on the main bike, and a little bike attached to the back with peddles for a kid.  It worked out great for us with 4 adults and 4 kids.  We rode to the Mohegan Bluffs that overlook the Atlantic Ocean.  We walked along the rocky beach to the "people's sculpture" that is constructed of debris that is found along the beach and built into a "house" of quite unusual proportions.  Buoys that mark crab pots or lobster pots, and fishing line and wooden helm stations all made up the foundation of this structure.  The kids had a great time climbing through the house and on the rocks and exploring the cliffs, while the adults sat and talked.

We are talking about heading to Sag Harbor tomorrow, weather permitting.  Our friends Eben and Wendy Block have rented a house in Sag Harbor for the whole week and we would love to hook up with them, but we have to see what the weather is going to do.  We were sitting having clams on Cenou, watching the fog roll in.  We need to be in Falmouth/Woods Hole on Saturday, the 6th, the meet the Dunoyer family who are coming to join us for a week's vacation.  We are learning a lot about planning on a boat.  It isn't as easy as it would seem.  We'll wake up tomorrow and see what the fog is doing.  Until then, I can't say what is in store for us.  It is kind of humbling to be at the whim of the weather.

Good night,

Christy, Joe, Cassie, and Juliana
