Saturday, May 26th, Bonifacio, Corsica, France
by Larson and Gav
It's 2:08 in the morning on Friday, May 25th and Gav and
I are serving on night watch. We have been dutifully
attending to our course, which has us arriving in
Bonifacio around 7am. We have spent our last eleven days
aboard Zia enjoying Joe's humor, Christy's fabulous
cooking, and the stimulating company of their two kids,
Cassie and Juliana.
To
pick up where Christy left off, we have been cruising
around Corsica with Cenou. We left Cala di
Palu for Cargese, the summer stomping ground of Claude's
youth.
While in Cargese, Claude rigged his windsurfer for Gav
and me to try. Neither of us was successful in getting
farther than two feet. However, Joe and Christy both
showed us up as they zipped around the beach. The same
afternoon Gav and I were learning to windsurf, Hobie had
his first swimming lesson when he slipped off the stern.
After a great dinner ashore, Christy caught a photo of
the guys rolling up their jeans in an attempt to imitate
French fashion.
The next morning we all conquered the fifteen minute
hike uphill into the town of Cargese for some grocery
shopping.
We
ate lunch at a small restaurant in town. We all enjoyed
our authentic Corsican food except Jules, whose salad
was inhabited by a horde of small bugs.
We
returned with our groceries and motored back for Cap
Rossu where Claude introduced Larson to sea urchin, a
local delicacy.
On
Cap Rossu we spotted a trail that led us to a Genoese
fire tower situated on one of its highest bluffs. The
view from the top was magnificent. Steep, jagged rock
faces dive virtually straight down into the water
creating one of the deepest bays in the Mediterranean.
Earlier today Joe skillfully squeezed into a tiny
anchorage nestled in Corsica's oldest natural preserve,
where we rafted up with Cenou and spent the afternoon
cliff jumping and cave exploring.
It
is Saturday at 1pm and we said goodbye to our adopted
crew a half hour ago, before they had a chance to finish
their update. Thirteen days flew by for all of us.
Larson and Gav's enthusiasm for discovery and learning
and their wonder at our lifestyle was contagious for us
all. Seeing our lives through their eyes makes us
appreciate it even more. Not to mention the new
perspective they bring to our surroundings. I can
pretty much guarantee that Joe and I would not have gone
in search of cliffs to jump off if it weren't for their
initiative. We had a blast!
We
miss you already, Larson and Gav. Have fun on the
rest of your adventure.
