Tuesday, November 21st, Badalona, Spain
I
think I've got everything packed. We emptied out
the fridge onto our neighbor's boat, locked up all the
hatches, stowed the bikes, shoe basket, and all the
other odds and ends that wind up cluttering the outside
of our boat. Our six week trip back to the States
will be longest we are away from Zia since we moved
aboard sixteen months ago. We are planning on
leaving around midnight tonight to drive to Madrid.
Our flight to Miami departs at 11am. The travel
plans aren't the best, but we are happy to be getting
home on 40,000 American Airlines miles each.
Originally, we were looking at over $2000 or 100,000
miles each. We opted for a "night watch" on the
highway instead to save the extra hassle and expense of
a hotel. Not to mention the fact that we had a lot
of stuff to get done today before we leave. We are
flying home through Miami, spending Wednesday night
there, and then continuing on to Washington National
Thanksgiving morning.
Among the tasks accomplished today was finalizing the
plans for school. We are to report to the
Collegio Creus
on
the bus line from the marina, at 9am on January 8th.
I can't believe it! Our friend Roland took me to
the office this morning, and we are so grateful for his
help. When we showed up, the office was closed
"for service reasons." The folks in the office
next door told Roland that we could try the satellite
office downtown. I'm not sure I would have gotten
that out of them on my own. At the next office
they also were not very encouraging, but consented to
call the appropriate school to see what they could do
since I was leaving tomorrow and couldn't wait.
Much to my surprise, the school said yes, they had room
for the girls and if we just popped around the corner to
drop off the paperwork, it would be all set. The
conversations we taking place in Catalán, although I am
sure they would have spoken Spanish with me if I had
tried to sort it out on my own. I do much better
understanding the Spanish than I do the Catalán.
Juliana was a little upset when I told them about
school. "But we don't speak any Catalán, mommy!"
Cassie was quiet for a minute and then said, "We'll
manage!"
I
have no doubt that we will have some tearful first few
weeks as they get used to the new language and new kids.
I'm nervous for them. But, I know in the end they
will do just fine. We'll just have to be as supportive
and positive as we can, helping them adapt to the new
situation as much as possible.
But, before we cross that bridge, we are going to have a
fantastic time catching up with friends and family back
home. We are so excited to see everyone. I'm
not sure how often I'll be updating while we are away
but I'll try to post some pictures at least! Have
a wonderful Thanksgiving to all our American friends.
We hope to catch up with everyone soon. SEND US
EMAILS because we love to hear from you.
Best wishes,
Christy, Joe, Cassie and Juliana
