Tuesday, March 7th - George Town, Bahamas
Dear Readers -
Please accept apologies from the Cunard Family,
for it is because of us that there hasn't been an update
for over a week Having lived on a boat several
years ago ourselves, we know exactly what it takes to
have a family of 5 invade your personal space for 6
days! First they faced the challenge of bringing
the boat over 400 miles north to our agreed upon meeting
place. Then there's cleaning, moving Cassie out of
her room and into Juliana's, and finally provisioning.
Aaahh, provisioning. Back on land they call it going to
the store. Provisioning sounds more important
because it is much more of a chore. Climbing into
the dinghy with your canvas bags, driving to the dinghy
dock, walking to the store, shopping, walking back to
the boat, getting soaked by that rogue wave on the way
back to the boat. Think you're done? Then you have
to find somewhere to put it!
We
have met up with Zia in a place called George Town on
Great Exuma Island. This is a very popular place
for cruisers who have been making their way south from
Florida through the Bahamas. The water is
beautiful, there's great holding ground for your anchor,
beautiful beaches, and a well stocked grocery store. Our
kids wanted to meet here because it was their favorite
place when we were out cruising. You see, there's
this beach called Volleyball Beach where the kids run
wild. They can be seen swinging from trees,
playing in the sand, forging new friendships, and even
playing volleyball. The only drawback about George
Town is that there are HUNDREDS of boats here. At
first it's very intimidating and it makes you want to
run away. However, after you discover the most
beautiful beach with perfect white sand, crystal blue
water and NO PEOPLE on it you forget about the crowds in
the anchorage, in town and on volleyball beach.
We're still amazed that there can be so many people in
the area but a beach that beautiful can be so empty.
As
always, Joe and Christy were wonderful hosts - providing
the luxurious vacation platform, pulling together
unbelievable meals, enduring extra mess aboard the boat,
and giving up their usual routine to ensure our vacation
was flawless. Our trip reminded us how the best part of
cruising is the friends and interesting people you meet.
This was reinforced as we got to know John and Po Martin
and their kids aboard Jamie. We were rafted up with
Jamie for three days next to Volleyball Beach. We
spent our days on the beach, diving for Lobster,
snorkeling, making new friends, diving for Grouper, and
eating Christy's great cooking! Sam speared a
grouper and a snapper the first day and on the second
day he brought us a nice lobster that we enjoyed for
lunch. We had movie night on the big screen aboard
Jaimie, played many games of Rummikube, and laughed at
the cruiser's net and constant hailing on channel 72.
Sam and Kari both made new friends with whom they had
sleepovers. Holly, Juliana and Cassie rekindled
their close friendship and are lacking many hours of
good sleep as we leave Zia. Joe and Christy will be
getting back to their routine this afternoon and will
probably respond to your emails within a day or two as
they recover from the nice cold we brought them from the
mainland, and the overtired kids we are leaving them
with. Please be patient with them - you, too may
someday enjoy the privilege of their special hospitality
in this new, exciting cruising life. We can't
thank you enough Joe, Christy, Cassie, Juliana, and Zia!
