July 25th Update - Delaware Bay, Delaware
10am - We are currently motoring south in the
Delaware Bay. The plan, which has changed at least 3 times
in the last 24 hours, by the way, is to head straight for Block
Island without stopping. The forecast is for southwest
winds and we should be able to make it there by tomorrow night,
if all goes well. There is a front that is scheduled to
pass through the area on Wednesday night. Even if we don't
make it tomorrow, we should be there well ahead of the front.
Listening to the weather on the VHF this morning, they were
calling for the hottest day of the summer tomorrow so I am just
as glad to be out on the water for it.
We spent last night at the Summit North
Marina in Bear, DE. It is about half way through the
Chesapeake and Delaware Canal. It is a nice enough spot,
but I felt myself getting anxious to leave only a few hours into
our stay. The earlier plan was to wait out the front
(which was then forecast for Tuesday/Wednesday) at the Marina.
I was not looking forward to another day of hanging out there.
Then, over dinner with the Dussauds at the marina restaurant, we
decided to sail to Cape May, new Jersey today (Monday) and then
make a few hops up the coast, hopefully winding up in New York
City, from where we could then pick our weather window to head
for Block Island. Our scheduled departure was for 6am.
The alarm went off at 5:30 and thunder and
lightening were all around us. Needless to say, we went
back to sleep. Claude and Joe went up to the marina office
at 7am to check the weather on the internet. By 7:30 we
had an entirely new plan - sail straight for Block Island.
I'm excited for my first ocean passage. Four hour watches
during the day and two hour watches at night. I'll write
another update from Block Island once we have caught up on our
sleep.
Wishing you all the very best.
Christy, Joe, Cassie, and Juliana
