Sunday, May 21st - en route to Bermuda

Aboard Zia, our fishing troubles continue. Yesterday, we checked our only reel to discover a fish had discretely robbed us of our wire leader and the first of three new cedar plugs. When I awoke this morning, Christy stood in the cockpit cursing. The latest fish-- a sizeable mahi-- had robbed us of our second new cedar plug. This evening, about an hour before dinner, a clothespin snapped and the far left hand-line tightened with a whip. Before any of us were aware of the situation, Christy was pulling the line in barehanded, length by length. Realizing the magnitude of the moment, I leapt to give Christy the gloves so she wouldn't burn her hands as she reeled in the first fish of the passage.
Pull after pull, Christy steadfastly struggled with the fish. As she pulled it nearer, Joe identified it as a mahi and stood ready holding the gaffe. I began to salivate. Joe handed me the camera, and I stood on the side eager to photograph-- and devour-- the resilient fish. With a few final heaves, Christy had the mahi within reach of the gaffe. Its blue and yellow scales sparkled with the setting sun. Finally, as its tail smacked against the port side of the boat, as we all were anticipating the fish freshly prepared for dinner, Christy's worst fears were realized. In the blink of an eye, the mahi manuevered its way to freedom, bringing the shackle, the wire leader, and the final new cedar plug with it in one grand escape.
Needless to say, we were all disappointed at the loss. None more so than Christy, Zia's tenacious, albeit (recently) hapless, fisherwoman. To alleviate some of the heartbreak caused by the Houdini mahi, we had an excellent dinner of grilled pork tenderloin, garlic-sauteed broccolli, and homemade potato chips. Tomorrow is another day.
